Backyard Booty Cometh...Again

In the five years since its inception, Kootenay Mountain Culture Magazine’s annual Backyard Booty slideshow/short film/spoken word amalgam of multimedia has become an institution of shorts. With a sell out crowd at Nelson’s Capitol Theatre, the Booty has emerged as one of the more coveted nights in the Kootenay mountain sports live entertainment canon.

Put on by the locally produced KMC, which recently launched it’s Winter 08/09 issue, the show is a collection of often custom produced slideshows, film shorts, trailers, stories, music and other digital media with a distinct Kootenay focus—artists who either live in the Kootenays or are profiling Kootenay material. “It’s all about letting the folks of Nelson see how talented their neighbours are,” says Mitchell Scott, KMC’s editor and Booty host. “We’ve got some very talented photographers, filmmakers, athletes and writers living in the Kootenays, the Booty is a way for the community to check out what they’ve been up to over the course of the last year.”

This year’s show features original, never-before-seen slideshows by local photographers Lucas Jmieff, Bryan Ralph, Doug LePage and others. Other shows include a Booty specific film short from Freeride Entertainment featuring Kootenay athletes at the recent Red Bull Rampage freeride mountain bike competition and a teaser from Lifecycles, the much anticipated mountain bike film from Rossland-based Stance Films.

“It looks like we’ll also have some live music from a born and raised Nelsonite who has recently moved back to town, as well as a reading from a talented up and coming writer,” continues Scott. “And don’t forget about the legendary Storytelling Competition, which is always hilarious and one of the signature features of the event.”

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for seniors and students, and are available only through the Capitol Theatre. Show time is Friday, December 5th, doors open at 7pm, show starts at 8pm sharp.
