Cold, big, crowded, fancy, expensive, like some downtown food court that crashed into a forest. Today most resort lodges are less lodge and more some kind of whacked hybrid of urban sophistication and mountain chic plopped down in some totally remote location—like a peak. A troika of unlikelies. Monstrous, cold, bright-like-you’re-still-outside-in-the-maelstrom pyramids of modern excess. You can’t call that a lodge. It’s not a lodge! A wood-hewn, millionaire’s mansion mimic, poorly placed apparition that sells pad thai and cappuccinos. Could it be?
As far as I’m concerned, the word “lodge” and “new” shouldn’t be allowed to share any sort of proximity. You shouldn’t be able to walk into a “new” lodge. Because when you do, walk into a “new” lodge that is, you’re walking into bullshit. Metaphorical bullshit of course, but who wants shit on their boots? Not me.
Real lodges are all about old and weathered. Lodges are warm because they’ve been worked in, like a good pair of gloves. They’re comfortable because you don’t care: You don’t care if your ski boot puts a dent in the door, or your jacket leeches fast melting snow down the wall. Kids can spill fries, squirt ketchup and let hot chocolate spill and soak into their mitts. The lodge smells that real booty, tangy, chilly life smell. Not that new varnish, new carpet smell that hides everything in new and takes decades to stifle.
The true lodge is a dying breed here in Canada. Resorts think we want fancy pants. Big space age windows and giant beams. Steel and granite and everything else opulent and expensive in the world. With giant windows everywhere. Whole trees even. I remember being a kid and not even wanting to see outside because the weather was so bad. You wanted a nice dark cave of retreat. Reprieve from the elements. To scam fries and bits of pop and warm up like you were in the basement beside the woodstove. Of course, if it were nice, you’d just eat outside the lodge. Duh.
But real skiers—from little tykes to old bastards—want the old lodge. I know it’s so. The dark, dirty in the corners, poorly planned, wood worn, bent, uneven, beer stained, story saturated spaces of skiing’s true self. You don’t give five shits about the interior as long as it has food, drink and warmth. Heck, it doesn’t even have to have food because hard-core badass skiers who really care about skiing bring sandwiches they eat on the chairlift. A hot chocolate machine maybe, but that’s it.
Why? Because you’re having so much fun outside. Because loitering over lattes in turtlenecks lost in poorly scheduled conversation is just plain wrong. In and out. Right back to the action. Let the good times roll. You don’t go to a ski hill to spend time (or quite worse, admire) the inside of the lodge, nor the food or the gift shops or the art. It’s like going to an NHL playoff game and spending unnecessary minutes styling your hair in the bathroom. Well, maybe not quite that bad.
And don’t forget. Ski amenities are a tax. Imbedded within every lift ticket you’re paying for at least a board foot of that fancy Douglas-fir window frame that extends way into the sky. A season’s pass covers part of the stupid bear sculpture in the stupid lobby. No, the lodge should be paid off. Completo. The bank said congrats way back in ‘82. It gets the odd reno because it’ll fall apart if it doesn’t. Maybe new bar stools every 20 years or so. But that’s it. That’s all we really need and should ever want. Shelter from the storm, a place so average kids would rather submit to freezing rain than hangout. Where the only loiterers are beat-down backpacks and the smell of the slopes.

This Applies to All Riders

As mountain and road riding start to float in off the horizon, I thought I'd share this.
Priorities, priorities

CONCERNED ROADIE

Dear Abby,

I've never written to you before, but I really need your advice. We had the cards stacked against us a bit. No one knew where the Knights of Pythias Lodge was (that's where we booked). There were other events happening including the CAA's annual fund raising auction. But no matter, where there's a will there's a way. We wanted to introduce the show in a non-pretentious way and managed to attract 60 or so Revelstokians. Young and old, boarders and skiers, hairy people and not so hairy. It turned out to be a beauty. Heather Lea from Revy told a great story, the shows had the audience on the edge of their seats, and we shredded big snow on a MASSIVE mountain all weekend (www.revelstokemountainresort.com).

Revelstoke's coming of age. Look for the Backyard Booty to return to Revy bigger and better next year.

-MS

KMC in Mexico

La Ticla, Mexico, Dec. 8, 2008
Under a long roof of tinder dry, sun baked palm fronds, sitting on a white plastic table beside a giant bottle of tequila was KMC's winter issue.
I had biked to MEC on Main St. in Vancouver three times in hopes of getting a copy before leaving for Mexico but it wasn't out yet. With a sell out crowd at Nelson’s Capitol Theatre, the Booty has emerged as one of the more coveted nights in the Kootenay mountain sports live entertainment canon.

Put on by the locally produced KMC, which recently launched it’s Winter 08/09 issue, the show is a collection of often custom produced slideshows, film shorts, trailers, stories, music and other digital media with a distinct Kootenay focus—artists who either live in the Kootenays or are profiling Kootenay material. “It’s all about letting the folks of Nelson see how talented their neighbours are,” says Mitchell Scott, KMC’s editor and Booty host. “We’ve got some very talented photographers, filmmakers, athletes and writers living in the Kootenays, the Booty is a way for the community to check out what they’ve been up to over the course of the last year.”

This year’s show features original, never-before-seen slideshows by local photographers Lucas Jmieff, Bryan Ralph, Doug LePage and others. Other shows include a Booty specific film short from Freeride Entertainment featuring Kootenay athletes at the recent Red Bull Rampage freeride mountain bike competition and a teaser from Lifecycles, the much anticipated mountain bike film from Rossland-based Stance Films.

“It looks like we’ll also have some live music from a born and raised Nelsonite who has recently moved back to town, as well as a reading from a talented up and coming writer,” continues Scott. “And don’t forget about the legendary Storytelling Competition, which is always hilarious and one of the signature features of the event.”

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for seniors and students, and are available only through the Capitol Theatre. Show time is Friday, December 5th, doors open at 7pm, show starts at 8pm sharp.

Issue 14 on the stands

The Roots Issue is out, and it's a beauty. Alyson Becker worked her but off in between shifts and classes.
Her last task was to tell us how it went. So here she be...

I picked up my first issue of Kootenay Mountain Culture magazine two years ago while scanning the displays of wish list bike parts lining the walls of the local cycle shop. The four piece elemental cross of outdoor shred shone off the front cover and lured me over instantly. Before I knew what had happened, I was hunched over the matte pages basking in the photos, words and white spaces all the while praising the brains behind this kick ass operation. Two years and a lot of great Kootenay living later, I found myself asking those same folks to take me on as a summer issue challenge – ahem, intern. Lucky for me they accepted my desperate plea to take part in the greatness that is independent media and I became part of the team.

Working with the folks at KMC was what I hoped it would be; trips to Nelson with post-meeting Whitewater visits, interviews with rad guys and gals in the biking industry, brushing up on my fly-fishing jargon and putting my energy into something pretty damn incredible. Not to mention I got to learn a lot from the people behind the paper. Of course the glamorous job of college intern doesn’t come without some challenges and I did spend countless hours scouring the world wide whackhouse looking for photos of mountains most of us have never heard of, trying to locate every backcountry lodge North of the 49 and digging up details on whatever the crew threw at me. There was more than one occasion where I woke up at 4 am in a cold sweat with the Kootenay Rockies map staring me in the face but in the end, it was all worth it.

I picked up the summer 2008 issue of Kootenay Mountain Culture two weeks ago with great excitement. The shred was gleaming off the front cover as it tends to do and every page behind that is page full of great images, words, thoughts and experiences. I feel pretty lucky to have had this opportunity to be a small part of the brains that keep independent, freethinking, shredtastic media alive, thanks!

Cedar Fight

Part of my job as editor of KMC is to get out there and giver. Reminds me of a story I wrote a while back...

New Issue only 2 weeks away

Since it's at the printer and there's nothing we can do about anything. I'm putting together the Kona catalogue (konaworld.com) and we're featuring a story on bicycle commuting. Crazy that 1% of American commuters use the bike to get to work. Crazy because the bike is the most efficient machine ever invented. An apple can get you 20 kilometres. Anyway, if you've ever been to Copenhagen know that bikes rule. One third of all urban trips are made via bicycle. And because there's so many babes in Copenhagen, there's tons of babes on bikes. Which makes bikes even more cool. In my research I came across this blog hosted by Copenhagen Cycle Chic. Check it out at copenhagengirlsonbikes.blogspot.com. Beauty. The babe and the bike. Two beautiful things quietly making their way through the world.
m

Design Weirdness

Two weeks away from the next issue of KMC. The Design Issue. We're quite proud of it, but at the same time, realize we're just scratching the surface when it comes to the whole notion of design. One of the feature stories looks at design in nature and the human relationship to this grand story that's been played out over incredibly long periods of time. While researching the piece I came across this photo. It's striking. I'm not sure if it happened by chance or purpose. Regardless, it makes you think. What is our role in the epoch tale of this world? Are we mere destructors? Or are we part of a natural system that's playing out according to plan? We prefer to view ourselves as either stewards or a cancer. Those philosophies are imbedded in the very semantics of our language. This image seems to challenge all of that. The beauty and rebirth that often hides under destruction.
M

Check out this beauty. Do a search for mountain + clothing + ads and you get stuff like this. Strange, but I think suits like this could make a comeback. Simple by design. No need of a belt. No wardrobe coordination skills necessary. Just attitude. The suit takes care of the rest. And just what is "the Fifth Season"? Whatever it is, it's hard to resist. It's hard not to want that. We might have to do an issue dedicated to discovering whether or not a fifth season exists. Looks like fun.

Just make sure you read the text in the ad. Our 13th issue. The Design Issue. Quite an epic this one. Different, with lots of unique sourced images that took a long time to find. But we're really happy with it. It'll be in a store near you at the end of May. Hope you enjoy it.
With any magazine, the cover's always a real challenge. Ours especially. Because it's free, we have the flexibility and freedom that comes with NOT having to compete on the newstand. Top 10 lists, huge copy all over the cover, a babe with big boobs hanging all in your face.

Our cover is still challenging to produce though, even though the cover text remains fairly cryptic, because we use multiple images, we're always trying to give the reader an idea of what lay inside. Tell a story on one page with few words isn't easy though. We basically start the cover first and it's the last to be finished. The most pained page in the book. But, as we all know, it's definitely the most important, even if it is a free magazine. Our philosophy is not about selling the magazine, but attracting people to pick it up and get involved. We want to intrigue and attract with the cover. Make people pick it up and get involved. Ultimately, in our eyes, that's the success of a magazine. Not how many people buy it, put how many people love it.

So, every once in a while our designer, Chris Rowat, blows off a little steam and makes a Joke cover, just to freak Peter and I out at the cover meeting. This one was particularly hilarious.

Kootenay Coldsmoke Powder Fest Update

February 22-25 2008

The birth of the Kootenay Cold Smoke Powder Festival grew from the backcountry skier’s obsession with choking on powder snow. The stars are again aligning in Nelson B.C’s Whitewater Resort, the wholesome haven of all things blissful. Snow and psyche are rolling in early to the West Kootenays, setting up the sport surface, for this second annual celebration of backcountry glisse. In a nutshell the event is centered around; workshops of backcountry skiing and snowboarding clinics, competitions; in ski mountaineering, an organic slopestyle and telemark slalom…then the nightcaps…socials/films/images/tunes mixed in with lots of great food, beer and scenery.

The vision is to provide a grass-roots gathering where both experienced and debutant backcountry skiers and snowboarders can celebrate the culture of backcountry pursuits amongst breathtaking scenery and world renowned snow. In addition to seasoned veterans, this event will also draw “keen to be” backcountry skiers and snowboarders who want to give off-piste adventures a try.

We have a full slate this year, with the focal point of the festival being clinics. Clinics for telemark skiers, alpine tourers, backcountry snowboarders, and avalanche awareness aficionados. Programs on snow study, terrain assessment, route finding, or skiing/snowboarding skills improvement.

You can’t have a festival without some comps! With the organizational expertise similar to that of an Olympic organizing committee, we are hosting a ski mountaineering rally, a backcountry slopestyle, avalanche beacon Olympics and the Tele Cup!! There is something for everyone. Don’t let the descriptions below scare you away. We will have categories from beginner to advanced, and some events will have a master’s category, for the wise among us.

The aerobically disposed will go head to head in the ROAM Randonee Rally. A ski mountaineering comp, in which we will see these skiing thoroughbreds ascend and descend through the scottishness, traveling up to 5000 vertical feet total in a skiers version of the pony express.

The Valhalla Pure Powderkeg Booter Slopestyle will feature a timed and judged event that will take athletes up a short 100 foot climb, then descend through an out of bounds run with natural kickers and features. Huckers will be judged on their faculties of smooooooth, vision, and descending prowess.

The Backcountry Access Avalanche Beacon Olympics is likened to the training a SWAT team member. Contestants will make use of the buried beacons pulsing away in the Beacon Basin. Prizes will be awarded to those who thread the gauntlet of safety finding the buried beacons in the shortest amount of time.

Last but not least, is the acclaimed Gerick’s Telecup. Adrenalin Telemarking junkies will court disaster through a maze of slalom gates in this pro style slalom, complete with jumps!

Other mainstays of the Festival are all in the whip-ups. Friday night’s Cold Smoke Opener, held at the Nelson Rod and Gun club, is morphing into more of an “off piste” international film festival, and these films are off the beaten track for sure. Films from Germany, Austria, France, and of course our back yard cinematographic jedis, like Bill Heath, are all in the plot. On Saturday night the Nelson Rod and Gun club will again host the Kootenay Cold Smoke Buff-eh and Cold Shot Foto Face-off, ending the night with the homegrown groovin’ vibes of Arthur Funkarelli. Festival participants will fuel the furnace with this Nelson feast fit for kings, then the Kootenay Mountain Cold Shot Foto Faceoff begins. We will profile this, first of its kind, winter sports photography contest for the Kootenays. Five photographers and their chosen athletes have been shooting for the four days leading up to Face – Off. They will then compile the ultimate slide shows from their images, set them to music, and dueling pictures begins. Cash and gear prizes for the judged best and people’s choice award are up for grabs. Also note we have a wild card spot! If you are interested in being considered for the Wild Card spot send a DVD with a 3-5 minute slide show of your best images (set to music). Halloween. 40,000 crazy people dressed up as bananas and Scooby Doo. Lots of really cool bands, beautiful desert sky, warm temperatures, just a few miles from the stench and oppulence of the world's most inscouciantly decadent and dirty cities. Then Rage Against the Machine comes on. The pulse of humanity rushes me and my friend deep into the fray, where fires erupt- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlk2PpeexCM -and guitar screams through the dry sky. But amongst all the slam dancing and sweat, the raised fists and night raised middle fingers, there's this overwhelming sense of unity. How the North American youth aren't down with the extravegance that envelops us. No matter how we fight it doesn't seem to matter. Whether we're hidden away in tiny mountain towns, or we stand up for ourselves and our beliefs on downtown city streets. There's a rage on. And it's serious. And man does it rock.

Read more about Rage Against the Machine on line. Harvard students, the sons of revolutionary painters, sci-fi freaks. Selkirk Wilderness Cat-skiing--the oldest cat ski operation in the world--was the place, powder was the dish. We arrived to the worst case scenario: rain up high, stoke on low. But, true to the wise words of photograher Dave Heath, "you never know until you go." So we went, got up high in the alpine and sure, it started puking. In the next two days we had 70cm of snow, bluebird skies, our own cat, lead guide Jayson Remple all to our selves, and some of the best powder skiing mountains on the planet. On assignment for KMC and Powder Magazine, I was joined by a full Kootenay Crew: photographers Peter Moynes and Dave Heath, athletes Mike Hopkins and Pete "I vere vool" Valesik. Just goes to show you that winter doesn't end in March round these parts. Check out my B-Grade digi shots. Keep skiing eh. And always go, even though it looks like it's going to suck like a lollipop.
Mitch

Awards n Such

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_JsX2NlTKUFA/ReS8Ik8jDxI/AAAAAAAAAAY/lgIfEBNZNgo/s320/Mitch_Awards.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5036357138849664786" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_JsX2NlTKUFA/ReS7Mk8jDwI/AAAAAAAAAAM/dtfk-lp2AYg/s320/Mitchell+and+Murray.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5036356108057513730" />
Yo,
So, can't help but give self props here. We're in the business of being legit, and well, awards some how do that. So, about a month ago I got a call while I was in Aspen, taking in the sun and the fur hats and sweet, sweet groomers (I was on assignment covering the X-Games). The call was to let me know I'd won the BC Tourism Media award for 2007. I keep some pretty stellar company with past award winners: cats like Jack Christie, a columnist with the Georgia Straight for over 20 years. The gala event was in Victoria, and I got to bring my wife. As love and luck would have it, we met in Victoria while attending UVIC. So, whether we're legit now or not, I'm still going to let the world now about it.

Here's some photos.
I'm going to start blogging more.

The Booty Cometh

Yo,
We're getting ready for our annual Backyard Booty show at the Capitol Theatre in Nelson. Our production manager almost died when the forklift snapped unloading the magazines into Peter's garage, but she managed to scurry out of the way just in time. A testament to how fat our magazines are this issue I guess. You'll find them at stores all over the Kootenays in the coming days. Our distribution manager in Vancouver already has them distributed at outdoor shops all the way up to Pemberton. We hope everyone enjoys this issue and encourage you to send in your feedback.

I also wanted to let people know that I'm involved in organizing an auction to create a trust fund for our good friend Noa Bokser, who's father passed away skiing last winter. It's a sad tale but our wonderful community is rallying to make the best out of a tragic situation. Visit www.careybokserauction.com in the coming days and place a bid on some truly wicked stuff, donated by some of the world's coolest outdoor athletes and companies.

Until I blog again,
Mitch

Blogging On

Well, our first blog. Is this a big deal? Hard to tell. The whole world seems to be blogging here and blogging there. So we're in. We're very excited about our upcoming issue which we get from the printer tomorrow (Friday, November 10). This will be our biggest issue to date at a whopping 84 pages. That's 20 pages bigger than our last issue. We've got stories from Gerry Lopez, Chic Scott and Pat Morrow, not to mention a gaggle of great photographs from lensmen all over the world. Thanks a ton to our advertisers for believing in KMC. There's a ton of great companies in this neck of the woods, check them out on our new links page. You could say we're off to the races now.

Stay tuned for more updates, er...blogs I guess you call them.
Mitch

KMC Magazine's Blog has just been launched.

Kootenay Mountain Culture Magazine's Blog is in action.
